Got some great legacy Sun Ultra Enterprise 2 and Sparcstation 20 Hardware for Free

The Ultra Enterprise is a Dual 300 and 768MB Ram.

The Sparcstation 20’s got dual 390Z50 and 128MB Ram.

Just Picked up a NeXTstation mono and N4000A monitor

It came with a working install of NextStep 3.3 and I was able to guess the root password. The best part is that it included some fun software and a hidden directory with some 1990s adult pictures. They’re pretty nice if you squint and stand a couple meters away from the monitor

Of course, the real reason I wanted this system was for the N4000A monitor. I can now get my cube working.

Called Mark at support and he claims every thing’s hunky dory. There were no outages in my area. Made some ‘changes’ to my account and would not tell me what they were.

Gotta like free. This was a good one which, of course, makes up for all the less than optimal trades found on Craigslist.

I haven’t booted it up yet but it’s got three 2GB drives, one 18GB, a bunch of RAM, two tape drives, dual 75MHz processors, graphics card, a wide SCSI/NIC card and some other card I can’t identify, probably another SCSI card. That 18GB drive will likely find its way into my SGI O2.

I’m a collector of fine antique computers and game systems that I spent most of my childhood playing with. This include Vic-20’s, Commodore 64’s, Apple II’s, and Amiga’s. The collection has expanded to other machines that I really would have liked to own like Sun’s, SGI’s, and NeXT computers. Over time the collection’s gotten a bit out of control (though not as bad as some of my peer’s problems) and needed to clear some things out.

Who Really Needs an Old Sun Enterprise E450?

I love old computers and when I saw this E450 at Boeing Surplus for $25 I had to have it.

…of course, I only have a 1700 sq ft house with five people in it and this thing is > 200lbs and as big as an end table. Beyond that, what can you do with it? Store your DVD collection in an Oracle database? Run a really mean PERL script?

No graphics, no games, it’s out of here. Sold it on craigslist for $25 bucks, but I broke that small door off on the way so I gave it to him for $5.

$75,000 retail to $5 on craigslist in seven years. That’s what I call depreciation.
